Hardware Support & Certification

As part of our mission to be The World's Easiest Desktop Linux, Linspire works hard to always have the best out-of-box hardware support for both desktop and laptop computers.

How does Linspire achieve such good hardware and peripheral support?

1. Insider Testing.  We have over 15,000 Insiders who help us test each Linspire version for months before a release.  These Insiders help test Linspire on literally thousands of different permutations of hardware and peripherals.  (Learn more.)

2. Built-in Diagnostic Report.
If a Linspire user encounters a problem while running Linspire, they can easily report the problem directly to our engineers, all with just a few clicks right from your Linspire desktop.  By using the Diagnostic Report, the user's hardware configuration is automatically sent to our engineers, along with the reported issue, to better help them in diagnosing the problem.  Linspire encourages users to use the Diagnostic Report anytime they encounter a problem.  The more reports we receive, the better Linspire is able to make the operating system.  (Learn more.)

3. Certification Lab and Process.  Linspire has an extensive Certification Lab in San Diego, and a process for certifying computers, motherboards, chip sets, peripherals, etc.  Linspire works with hardware manufacturers to certify hundreds of different computers and pieces of hardware.
Click here to view a list of certified hardware supported by Linspire.  Even if a particular item isn't certified, there is a good chance Linspire will still work, given the wide range of certification we do with the Linspire OS on core chip sets, drivers, etc.  In fact, we even make it easy for people to source compatible hardware at the lowest prices at http://linspire.com/compatibility.

Linspire has a sophisticated database system that keeps track of the hardware test 'life cycle' for all hardware sent it by vendors for certification.  These companies can track the processes, via the on-line database, to provide communication and constant updates of where their hardware is in the test cycle, all in an automated fashion.  Click here for an example of Linspire's Certification Tracking Database.

4. Certifying at the Source.  Linspire works with all the major chip and motherboard manufacturers to start testing and certifying at the chip and motherboard level.  For example, Linspire maintains a presence in Taipei Taiwan to work directly with the source manufacturers.  Linspire also has a very close relationship with Intel, AMD and Via to insure compatibility at the processor and chip levels.  By keeping compatible with the chip sets and motherboards, the likelihood of supporting a wide range of different computers goes up tremendously.

5. CNR (click and run).  Because every Linspire computer has CNR technology, it makes it easy for Linspire to insure that every computer running Linspire automatically and invisibly keeps current with the latest hardware drivers for their computer and peripherals.  Without any complicated work by the user, they know their computer will stay current with the best support for their machine.
